Hurricane Dorian

I spent 47 years in the insurance industry and consequently learned more about hurricanes and what harm they can do than I really wanted. As of this Thursday afternoon it is projected as a cat 4 at land fall.

This possible scenario is really troublesome. First the entire east coast of FL has a dense population. Many of these inhabitants have never experience a hurricane and many will mistakenly feel they can ride it out. That did not work out well for those who tried ride out Camille and Katrina. I haven't heard much about storm surge yet, but a cat 4 will being quite a surge. The majority of the structures are probably OK for cat 4 winds, but structures cannot be built to overcome strong surges of water. Another is all the crops in FL and south AL and GA that are close to harvest. If Dorian is as slow moving as projected it will devastate those crops.

Just pray for those folks!

We are 200 miles inland from Charleston so this one will have little impact on us. The ones that come in from the gulf and track up through GA are the ones that impact us.

Dorian can still be quite damaging, but nothing like it could have been.

I see mandatory evacuations are up for the Carolinas. They do this here when we have fires, but many stay behind to protect their property with a wall of water from multiple hoses, I'm one of them.
However, if I lived along the coast and they said you need to leave? I'd have bailed days prior. There is no stopping a wall of water with fire, quite the opposite.

You got it. The surge is way under reported. That is normally what kills folks. After Camille bodies were found in trees from the surge. I give authorities in Hurricane prone areas kudos for being honest now. They say if one stays in a mandatory evacuation zone they will not be rescued until after the storm passes.

Exactly! I have respect for water. My little creeks on my property that meander through the forest can get 20' deep in flash flood, I can only imagine a wall of water miles across coming in like a flash flood.
I can deal with quakes and fires, that's a part of life here, but to live in an area prone to hurricanes, and expect to be saved by someone else for your own stupidity is beyond comparison.

Sean Connery lives full time in the Bahamas. He road out the hurricane at his villa.

Said he fell in love with the place after filming Dr No.
