What is the point ?

The Super-Rich buy these things as Status Symbols.

If they cannot display them to their friends, they are useless to them.

Only very stupid thieves steal them.

Usually inside insurance jobs. The insurer will gladly pay to get the piece back rather than pay the full, over bloated price the painting had been valued at.
Seriously, no piece of art has value, the industry is a scam, just like De Beers and diamonds, a worthless piece of rock aside from industrial applications, so it has more intrinsic value than a badly painted picture.
