Burger King is offering 1-cent Whoppers ‘at’ McDonald’s
« on: December 05, 2018, 03:21:34 PM »

Quote
Burger King is using its competitor’s own restaurants as part of a devious new promotion.

Their “Whopper Detour” deal is giving customers Whoppers for a penny. But, and here comes the sneaky part, customers have to be using the Burger King app to order – and be at a McDonald’s.

Business Insider reports that the Burger King app will recognize the user’s location as being at a McDonalds and unlock the penny deal. After you place an order for the Whopper, the app will “detour” you away from McDonald’s and navigate you to the closest Burger King so you can pick it up.

The Burger King twitter account puts it like this:

Order a Whopper for a penny only “at” McDonald’s with the BK app. yes, you read that right. drive near a McDonald’s and use the BK app. no need to go to their drive-thru. get yours before December 12th.

The deal starts Tuesday and runs through Dec. 12th. For more information see the Burger King website.

You all know McDonald's was in on this, right?
Think about it, if they weren't, they'd be suing BK out the ass. In truth, it's a great scheme, BK and Mcd` gets a ton of free ad time, and both double their traffic.
If I were to be at a McDs' and hungry, I'm not about to drive to BK for a burger, even if I had planned it, McD's is cheap so saving 98 cents isn't going to make or break anyone.

I did a search for "Mc Donalds sues Burger King over 1 cent whopper deal", and guess what? Not a peep out of McD's, not even a mention.

Sued for what?

Free enterprise?
Free speech?
A great ad campaign?

You do know, you can sue for virtually anything, right?
But do your own search, you'll find Mickey D's is mum on this, because it benefits both chains.

Keen observation. I was thinking about this earlier. All is good in playfull jabs until it comes to money and free advertising.

Yeah, it's pretty slick when you think about it. They got together and worked this up between themselves, otherwise, to avoid lawsuits BK would have included Taco Bell, and Wendy's etc, because in truth, McD's is being singled out, but if not for their contractual agreement, there'd be a cease and desist order issued immediately until this could be resolved.
By targeting all fast food, they could avoid litigation, but because they worked this out, McD' sits quietly as people drive in, with the idea that they might get a whopper, then change their mind and stay and buy a quarter pounder instead.
Both win with free advertising, both increase their bottom-line, win, win for both.

Being in business all my life afforded me an eye for an edge in advertising, and quite honestly, this one is genius. Reminds me of the phony gas wars we used to see in the 50s and 60s, where an intersection had a gas station on every corner and would place a spray painted sign out declaring gas war, which usually meant the price would drop a few cents by the end of the day and probably the cheapest in town.
Of course, the station owners were in on it, back when there were more privately owned stations than there were corporate.

Good times, a time when the station with the most free amenities, such as air, chilled water, clean bathrooms along with a helpful station attendant brought a loyal customer.
Now, you lug a key chained to a brake pad to use a dirty restroom, water costs the price of a cup, air is 25 cents or ore and maxes out at 40 lbs if you're lucky and all presented by someone who can't speak good English.

Anyway, this marketing thing was genius, hope it works, we could see more innovative ideas that save a small group of people money, kids and the poor.

If there was collusion between the two wouldn't be on the verge of anti-trust violations? It ceratinly does not rise to the level of price fixing, but it seems it is living on thin legal line.

Exactly the point.
Why would BK open itself up for litigation, unless there was a former agreement?
Funny thing about marketing and the legal end of the corporate structure, they are completely independent of one another, but Mkting had to clear it with legal first who couldn't find an issue with it, had they, they wouldn't have allowed this campaign to continue in the first place.
Corporate entities know no animosity, this is strictly business.
I could definitely be wrong on this, but I doubt it because it's a win win for both entities.

Agree. If both parties do not feel any negative results probably nothing. Of course, we do not know what some over reaching leftist state government might do.
