Fred Thompson was once my pick for president. He's since fallen far down the list.

He's made an acting career out of playing "no-bullshit" characters, often portraying someone in charge who stands out for accepting no excuses.

The trouble is, his brand of bullshit is not much more palatable than any other brand. He's soft on a lot of issues that are near and dear to me. I like his skepticism on the greatest mega-scam in world history -- Anthropogenic Global Warming -- but he's a bit wishy-washy on lots of other things.

Instance: His support for the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. (He has since backed off some, but not much.)

Instance: He does not have a particularly good rating from gun-rights groups.

Instance: Worst of all, he supports the creation of a path to citizenship for the illegals here now. He doesn't say it should be an easy path, but he thinks it should be clear and quick, a way that allows them to gain citizenship on a par with those who have applied legally. I can't support that ever.
