Note the shape of the hat pin. That is not a Texas Lone Star (since she was from Ohio, I believe) nor is it a U.S.-style star. That may be an inside joke with other gunslingers. The shape and size of that pin are exactly like those of through-and-through high caliber exit wound  heh  Sure maybe she just liked the pin. Or maybe it was something more...clearly being a scrupulously non-violent Quaker like her parents, did not float her boat (she married another gunslinger).

To me it looks more like diamonds and pearls to go with her ear ringing.  But that's just my way of looking at the hat pin.  She was a classy lady back in her days.

I guess we'll never know if that pin was more than just a pretty pin (unless someone wrote about it in her biography). Maybe I'll pick up a copy of one of her bios and do some delving. It's wonderful that her tradition lives on - I am blessed to have a couple of cool friends at work who are quick-draw champions. Bard and Karen (an unrepentantly heteronormative married couple) compete in most of the regional contests and usually win. We have had many fascinating talks about firearms and politics - and yes, they are strong conservatives.  Warm, kind, hard-working people with a marvelous sense of humor. Genuine gentleness can only be manifested by strong people - that is why there is so little gentleness on the far left - only strong people feel confident enough in themselves to be gentle. Weak people must forever be proving to the world (and thus to themselves) that they are tough and so often mistake possessing a readiness to be cruel and harsh for possessing strength and confidence.
