When people try and tell me it was the Baby Boomers that turned the country socialist, I always reply, it was the so called "Greatest Generation", and their parents that were responsible for ruining what our Founders had given us.

Case in point and Norbeck wasn't alone, he was representative of the GOP of the time, maybe not so much concerted, but each and every one of them wanted something to take back to their constituency, as well as create a legacy for themselves.
What's sad is, he had the backing of the people of the day. This was only the beginning, and it wasn't just the party, the people as well are to blame for where we are today.
They saw govt as the big builder of society, while we see it for what it is today, an oppressive entity willing to use force of coercion to retain power.

South Dakota Governor Peter  Norbeck
State Website
Office Dates:  Jan 02, 1917 - Jan 04, 1921

Born:  Aug 27, 1870

Passed:  Dec 20, 1936

Birth State:  South Dakota

Party:  Republican

PETER NORBECK was born in Vermillion, Clay County, in what would become the State of South Dakota. After attending the University of South Dakota, he became a businessman, serving as president of the Norbeck Drilling Company, which revolutionized artesian well drilling. He served for six years in the South Dakota Senate and for two years as Lieutenant Governor. The first native South Dakotan to become governor, Norbeck pursued a progressive plan for the state, and during his first year in office, the legislature enacted nearly 400 laws, including measures providing state loans to farmers. Constitutional amendments were also submitted calling for state warehouses and grain elevators. These amendments, along with legislation permitting South Dakota to engage in internal improvements and to enter any business enterprise that was approved by the state legislature, were approved by popular vote. When the United States entered World War I, Norbeck oversaw the state's preparations for war and led the Red Cross Blood Drive in 1918. During his second term, he secured passage of legislation creating the Custer State Park and Game Sanctuary in Black Hills and launched an extensive road construction program. He did not seek reelection to a third term but went on instead to campaign successfully for a seat in the U.S. Senate, where he was largely responsible for completion of Mt. Rushmore, for the establishment of Grand Teton National Park, and for enlargement of Yellowstone National Park. He died in Redfield, South Dakota.

So you are saying that completing Mt. Rushmore was a socialist act?

Stealing tax dollars to build a tourist attraction in the middle of nowhere of iconic men of history is hypocrisy defined.
Stealing the mountain from the Sioux, which they referred to as Six Grandfathers and naming it after a NY lawyer is also an insult to our hosts in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Furthermore, seizing land owned by the people and designating it as a park further slaps in the face of free enterprise.
So yeah, it has socialist written all over it!

By contrast? Look up Crazy Horse momunent.

But please, feel free to comment on the rest of my post.

Solar is absolutely on the mark!
Our only Principled Conservative Party was the Southern Agrarian Rural Democrats of Jefferson, Madison, Randolph, Lee, Harrison and Rutledge; among others. Sadly it was fatally infected w/Slavery due to the iron grip of its Plantation Class.
Post-Civil War, the Republican Party emerged contemporaneous w/our Industrial Revolution.
But beyond platforms and slogans, from day one the GOP has been:
* Corporatist in allegiance; their relentless promotion of regulatory legislation being mute testament to that reality.
* Protectionist in trade, which promoted every Excise Tax and Tariff using the cliche' that they were necessary to protect our "infant industries". Hm.......
* Statist, rather that States Rights in focus, given the fact that they essentially controlled the Presidency,  Congress and Courts from Lincoln to FDR. Amendments 14, 15, 16, 17 which Conservative rightly rail against,
are testament to that focus.
So much for the sanctimonious malarkey that the GOP is the party of the people!!!

Spot on! The GOP has played us far too long and the country is revolting against both party's, as the Dims sooo painfully discovered.
We're in a race to save the country, and I believe we're winning, but we're but one generation and we're about to expire, so we have our work cut out for us in educating the next generation, luckily the Dims elected a Marxist and made it an easy decision for Millennial to abandon Marxism

Funny isn't it? Having a Marxist in the WH actually exposed the gop'E for what they are, a bunch of Fabian socialists.
