Title: Lewis's Packing List, of Lewis & Clark
Post by: Solar on November 21, 2017, 05:39:42 PM
This is fascinating stuff. I was searching for foods during the 17th and 18th century and stumbled across the list of supplies Lewis & Clark took on their journey, and food consisted mostly of emergency rations of beef jerky and what amounted to soup bullion, much of which was used up early, so they hunted as they went.

What I found interesting, was just how prepared they were to bribe, trade or simply befriend along the way with wampum, better know as trinkets.
Check the list. I bet you'll have to look up a bunch of stuff as I did.

What no pop corn?
Natives already had a supply of their own.

I was just surprised they didn't include a bathtub. According to record, the boat weighed 8 tons.
I remember watching a film in school showing the expedition lifting all the boats and supplies across land to get to clearer water.
I think they lied to me back then or they had a thousand men with the strength of gorillas and history hides the fact that early European settlers were actually cyborgs.

I should add, they had some amazing tech as well, like their air rifle.

It would take 1,500 pumps (think hand bicycle pump) to reach a whopping 800 psi, allowing approximately 40 discharges before losing muzzle velocity. Captain Lewis may have carried spare tanks; they were designed with that in mind. One can imagine the lowest-ranking member of the crew receiving the job to pressurize three or four tanks. The compression in a Girardoni was more than 20 times today's automobile tires.
