Title: The Official "How to run the forum better" thread
Post by: Sick Of Silence on May 05, 2018, 07:33:19 PM
If we are going to post links, we need to post (at the very least) several key paragraphs to summarize what the link is about just incase that link disappears. Most any forum I have been to does that (we have always posted the whole article). This especially goes when you post a Craigslist page because it will expire. Articles expire. Websites disappear. And it also helps when you need to search for that information down the road.

A summary is great, but what I prefer most is original articles OP, even if it's just commentary, but a few parsed paragraphs are good as well, or just the opening paragraph in the least.
But never post an entire article from a website without the author's permission or it's a copyright violation.
There are exceptions of course, like govt web pages, those we as taxpayers, paid for, or as you mentioned, craigslist, and a screenshot is even better in that case.

It's pretty much etiquette any longer, most understand the laws now, but even I get lazy at times and just post a few sentences and a link.

I'd like to see a THUMBS UP feature.

It encourages participation.

There's a huge problem with that. It encourages laziness. Instead of someone replying, they simply give a thumbs up and move along.
So, in essence, it becomes a onesided opinion, where no one expands on the topic, and our thousands of readers never get an expanded perspective, and no one actually posts to help explain the post.
In the end, one opinion holds and no one ever gets to see the entire argument negating or supporting the OP.

That's VERY true. That happens to me when I'm on Disqus for too long. I come here and look for the like button.

Me too, and then I suddenly realize, I'll actually have to click post, so if I'm going to go to all that trouble, I figure what the Hell, say something.

How about not messing with posts that don't need to be messed with. If the post is in the correct section to begin with, leave it there. I normally just check "unread posts" whenever I come to the site. I did not notice it got moved. I go looking for it, and I can't find it. It appeared to be to have been deleted to me. I though "wow, I never though I get censored on a Conservative forum like that. So, to be sure, I go search for it and I find it moved to some child board. To me, that is a form of censoring.

I used to spend most of my time on another forum (unrelated) that had the options to add reputation (a form of thumbs up/thumbs down) to a particular post. It did get abused in the silly sense that we all added positive reputation to each other for a short period in a particular thread. We also kind of had an unwritten rule that if you wanted help outside of a forum (external support like a voting for them in a competition), positive reputation was kinda expected in return. But, other than that, everybody only positive repped other like minded posts (and not because it was a profound posting).

The only time I really gave negative repped was usually when a spammer joined and everybody kinda repped them badly until they get banned and everything deleted. I typically did not negative rep anybody because there were a few hardcore Liberals that were vengeful. I eventually learned to generally ignore them and put them on my "ignore" list (forum function). What I did do was counter balance things by added positive rep to anybody who had to deal with those Liberals. I also positive repped those that got unfairly negative repped (usually newbies who get punished by the older crowd generally on unnecessary things).

Having your post or thread censored like above is infuriating. I kinda reminds of that forum on how it was being run back in the day by Liberal minded administrators and moderators. As I said, I generally avoided "trouble" in the realm of negative repping of people. But, having your post of thread unnecessarily censored on a Conservative forum is outrageous.

Don't bring "repping" to this forum. I wouldn't care about "getting along" to care about my forum "reputation". You damn right I would negative rep a moderator or administrator if they acted like an establishment Republican and not a Conservative. Any political forum would be the place to "fight fire with fire" (a point I made in another thread) when it comes to fighting Liberalism on all levels.

People can do what the want; it's not my forum. But, if you want more members and more participation, maybe the dumb "happenings" (teacher with the Lego) is things people are more interested in then North Korea. Notice how Fox News primetime political opinion shows (like Tucker Carlson) can talk about both? Peace talks with North Korea is just as important as the teacher who doesn't want boys to play with Lego for a Liberal reason.

Nope. We do not censor on this board. If a thread is moved, it's for several reasons, one being it was posted in the wrong forum, or it gets badly derailed Eg, religion is injected and the thread winds up contentious at best. Or as in the case of your thread, it was a nothing burger by a no rate pop singer making noise, this doesn't even rise to a distraction since no one was even talking about it in the media.
Please don't take a move as personal.
By our commenting on it, we raise it's level of interest in the media, by not talking about it means they failed and move on.

Look, I get it, crap like that is irritating as Hell, but our talking about it makes it bigger than it really is.
Think about her comment, it was beyond stupid and if you look, this is a daily occurance with the left, so rather than doing their job and suckering for their clickbait, it's better if we ignore it and post the changes Conservatives are making, in other words, let's give them something to get upset over, steal the narrative and never look back.

I agree, it has its positives, but more than likely becomes a way for someone to abuse another poster they don't like.
So to avoid such happenings, we never instiututed iit.
Also it becomes a lazy way of posting, where instead of carrying dialogue further, no one expands on the subject and an important thread dies quickly.

Again, you were not censored, people do read all the other forums.

Agree, it becomes a form of retribution.

Which is why we have a huge readership, we try and stick to politics. Like I said, you're still new here and haven't had enough exposure to find the rythm, but one of the main goals of this forum, is education, we want to educate people on what it means to have a Conservative take on things.
This is why even the most innocous threads can be teaching moments for those still trying to understand what it means to be a conservative.

All I ask is that you be patient, we have an agenda and the longer you're here, the more you'll come to see that it actually works.

I don't understand that...  How can it be a copyright infringement if you add the link where you got it from?  Doesn't that indicate you're NOT taking credit for the article?  On The Politics Forums, we posted the ENTIRE articles all the time, and nobody ever told us it was a copyright infringement.....?

Nope! You stole the revenue from the site that paid for it. Many of these news sites contract with writers and the website gains ad revenue from those coming to read the authors work, but when you post the entire article, in essence, you stole their revenue.

Nah, this is an open platform prog, so all addons are generally free. Smileys are a pain in the ass and ours suck, but they are but of a few that work on this platform.
If you know of other small ones that work, let us know, thing is, you can't just download the ones you like, they come as packages, so they will replace the crap we have.

how about a reputation feature where you give rep which means a number and then you can also send a personal message with that rep feature?
