I frickin' HATE it!

But I may be able to work through it.

There's really not much difference between Windows 7 -- actually an excellent OS, maybe the best Windows yet -- and Windows 8. With Win8, most of what Microsoft did was make all the really good features of Win7 almost impossible to find or use. By cloaking all those features behind that idiotic "metro" interface, MS literally walked away from the desktop computer market, leaving everyone who doesn't have a touch screen -- or the inclination to use one -- out in the cold.

Microsoft has something of a history of pulling stunts like this. The company released a damned good OS when Windows 98 came out, and managed to significantly improve on that with Win98SE (Second Edition). But two years later, we got Windows Me (Millennium edition), which was essentially Win98SE with weird makeup and a clown outfit. It is actually true that every install of WinMe includes a complete, entire version of Win98SE, bit for bit identical. This is one of the gimmicks MS uses to keep those checks coming in steadily.

If you would like your Win8 (or 8.1) machine to work like Win7, there are ways to make that happen. Check out this article for some tips on how to do it.
