Yesterday I went to a local butcher shop to pick up some meat and check on getting a side to throw in the freezer. The owner told me that now was not a good time to buy on the hoof. Prices are at around $5.00 a pound and you end up losing a over a third of that in the processing. So I did the math...
So on the hoof I buy 250 lbs at a cost of $1,250.
You end up with around 160 lbs of meat. So I am now paying $7.80 lb.
They sell their lean ground beef for $4.49 lb and their Sirloin steaks for $8.99.
Guess I will stick to going buy and just picking up what I need for a while longer.

meat is way expensive. I pretty much wait til fall and then get the half cow. Now is when I start stockin on fish, chicken, gettin my jar inventory figured out for when I start putting up my stuff. I'll be starting my seeds soon,,, but as a general rule I wait til fall to buy my half.

I will keep that in mind and hopefully be able to get a better price then. I am debating what kind of shape I will be in for a garden this year, I'm having my surgery later this month. I dream big and then run out of time... ooooo yes surgery will put the squash to alot of things I hope it isnt to long in healing. I've always made sure the pantry and freezer is stocked by Nov 1. With our ppup, I have to re-work the gardens completely... I am going to lose the fence line.... no biggy.... I like gettin the meat from the beef dude, less chemicals injected,,,I like putting up the veggies and jelly,jams and that stuff,,,I know whats in it....

Thanks for the thoughts. Surgery is scheduled for March 21st. I am having a cervical fusion so will probably be down for at lest 4-6 weeks. Never had surgery so am just starting the freak out stage...lol. Pre-op is Wednesday. Good thing I have Solar to take over while I'm down. Toy

Thats gonna be not alot of fun. But I am thinking you will do well with it. Theres alot of therapy to go along, just dont get frustrated and dont start thinking just because you start to feel tip top you can do everything you could before. Had a gal pal down by the cabin do just that with the same exact surgery.....it wasn't fun for her,lol. Then again she doesnt have a good man like you do.......

Thanks Elfie. Yep the hard part will be not doing anything. It is not my nature. Solar has mentioned drugging my food and or duct taping me to my chair. :wink:

It has been some time since activity on this "thread" but I would like to interject something.
We started feeding flaked barley to our pigs last March.Before that we fed crimped corn and a premixed "pig and sow "pellet. Corn was going up in price and we likes to try new things anyway.
Corn has steadily gone up since the ethynol craze took hold. I'm sure that you all know that is the biggest reason for meat prices going so high. It's not the only reason though.There is a serious war on between the government agencies put in place to regulate agriculture and we the poor shmucks who are actually doing the grunt work.
All things considered, you might be able to find cheaper meats at your market than auction, but I don't believe the quality will be as good as that of a local farm raised beefer.
I thought that my taste buds were just getting old until I tasted home raised beefer at a friends.

YOu are so very right, anything that has to do with corn is going to jump big and bad. Food prices are going to get crazy... Next few years is going to be a shell shocker for prices....

Well, I am fixing that,,,,ordering my seeds today,,, going to start a load end of March,,,, get my indoor veg garden going then also, slap up the green house and bust out a yard full of anything I want..... I am tired of eating chemical induced food so it travels well.
