Title: Owning A Dog Makes You Live Longer
Post by: Solar on November 18, 2017, 06:47:01 AM
Yeah, I know, I said "Duh!", to the headline as well. I don't know that it adds all that many years to one's life, but it sure as Hell makes life better by tenfold.
It doesn't matter if you own a dog, what matters is do you interact with animals on a daily basis, and as the study points out, ones responsibility of owning a dog brings with it a responsibility of keeping it exercised, which drags your lazy ass out of the house as well.
So get off your fat ass and take the neighbors dog for a walk, it'll do you both good.

Dogs may be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk in their owners by providing social support and motivation for physical activity. We aimed to investigate the association of dog ownership with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death in a register-based prospective nation-wide cohort (nā€‰=ā€‰3,432,153) with up to 12 years of follow-up.

I don't know about living longer, but I believe it helps one heal faster.
One of the first things hubby asked for after his heart surgery was a lap dog.
He'd never really had an interest in one before, but I realized that he somehow instinctively
knew it would help him. We didn't get one little dog, we got two and I really believed they helped him heal faster.

No doubt about it. How can a person not smile when a puppy wags their tail in adoration of you?

I've had dogs all my life, probably somewhere around 30 or more, out of all those dogs, I was lucky enough to have three that I considered pain dogs.
Dogs that could sense your pain, be it physical or emotional, but they had an amazing ability to absorb it and relieve me of, sometimes debilitating pain from injuries.

I totally get what you're saying. I just wish everyone could see the health benefits and appreciate these adorable creatures, like we do.

Yeah, where I live it's imperative one own a couple of dogs to keep predators away, but truth is, that's an excuse to always have dogs around.
Oh, and mustn't forget the kitties, though I'm not a cat person by any sense of expanded imagination, I always have two cats for mousers, though a very young Lynx did just show up recently, which should keep the rodent population under control beyond the house.
And yeah, the cats are family as well. :blushing:

And they all show up at bedtime and feeding time.

Yeah, and the Raccoons always come late, like 2:00 am for leftovers. :sneaky:

I'd have a shelter and as many strays as I could save from murder if I lived in a more temperant climate.

So would I !!!
Just can't handle taking care of them in this cold weather.
I was looking at all of those expensive mansions that are burning up and thinking, "What was spent on just one
of those homes could have paid for an awesome animal shelter. I love the cats and dogs.

Don't owning a pet in general improves your life regardless of what it is?

I know my life seems empty without the additional life in the house.
I honestly believe it was my dogs in the past, that gave my life purpose and helped create the person I am today.
Though libs would call me a raging ass hole, my dogs would tell another story.
I don't think the cats give a shit.

Yep, as long as you feed them, you're their slave.
At least they keep the mice under control, though, one of them brings us Dougfir cones as her kill/gift, maybe she's nearsighted...
Hell, probably just stupid, they were, after all, rescues.

My little kitten I call Boo is no longer a little kitten.  My wife call her The Tasmanian Devil with four legs.

I know what you mean. One of ours appears to be bipolar, while the other is damn near feral.
Kitty says "I want to play" so you indulge her and she instantly shreds your hand. They're toys cats, I have the Shepard. I got the better end of the deal.

Our last two cat have been feral to some extent.  As they get older more and more of the wild life comes out.
