I know that a lot of people have special dishes they cook for New Years Day.  What do you do...feel free to share recipes. 8) 8)

FOR LUCK IN THE NEW YEAR
Traditionally, it was thought that one could affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year by what they did or ate on the first day of the year.......
.....Traditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes "coming full circle," completing a year's cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year's Day will bring good fortune.

Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity. Cabbage is another "good luck" vegetable that is consumed on New Year's Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. In some regions, rice is a lucky food that is eaten on New Year's Day.

Was reading more of the article and found there are foods you shouldn't eat.... ??? ???

What Not to Eat

In addition to the aforementioned lucky foods, there are also a few to avoid. Lobster, for instance, is a bad idea because they move backwards and could therefore lead to setbacks. Chicken is also discouraged because the bird scratches backwards, which could cause regret or dwelling on the past. Another theory warns against eating any winged fowl because good luck could fly away.

Now that you know what to eat, there's one more superstition—that is, guideline—to keep in mind. In Germany, it's customary to leave a little bit of each food on your plate past midnight to guarantee a stocked pantry in the New Year. Likewise in the Philippines, it's important to have food on the table at midnight. The conclusion? Eat as much lucky food as you can, just don't get too greedy—

One family I know always serves sauerkraut on New Year's Day. Just before it's served, someone puts a silver dollar in it. When it's spooned out, whoever gets the coins will supposedly enjoy EXTRA good luck all year.

Anybody else do this?

(Not at my house. Sauerkraut makes me wanna puke.  :P)

As a German it was tradition in our family for years, but I've never heard about the Silver Dollar thing before.

You probably won't want to come near the Solar house.  I am planning a more traditional German New Year fare.  So either cabbage or sauerkraut will be on the menu.. ;D ;D ;D

for us it is herring... Himself has had us do this since day 1,lol. His grandmother said that you hold a dollar bill and eat the herring at the stroke of midnight it will bring you fortune in the coming year....
As far as food goes... IF we make it to the river....(depends on ice out for this weekend) I will make venison stew and that home made corn bread. If we stay home..... I got some tuna steaks and will try something new with them. I like to do new year with new food.

So I ended up making beans with ham hocks and cornbread.  I am trying to find a homemade bread recipe that Solar likes.  I baked a loaf yesterday and rolls today.  Still haven't found the one he is looking for but I will keep trying.    :)

If you have a good yeast bread recipe then share and I will give it a try. 8) 8)
