WASHINGTON — There's a new push to make testing for the AIDS virus as common as cholesterol checks.

Americans ages 15 to 64 should get an HIV test at least once — not just people considered at high risk for the virus, an independent panel that sets screening guidelines proposed Monday.

The draft guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force are the latest recommendations that aim to make HIV screening simply a routine part of a check-up, something a doctor can order with as little fuss as a cholesterol test or a mammogram. Since 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has pushed for widespread, routine HIV screening.

Yet not nearly enough people have heeded that call: Of the more than 1.1 million Americans living with HIV, nearly 1 in 5 — almost 240,000 people — don't know it. Not only is their own health at risk without treatment, they could unwittingly be spreading the virus to others.

The updated guidelines will bring this long-simmering issue before doctors and their patients again — emphasizing that public health experts agree on how important it is to test even people who don't think they're at risk, because they could be.

Also aimed at the huge portion of the population that can't seem to stay with their spouse.  And since Justthefacts already pointed out that sex on the first date is basically expected, it is no wonder this is rampant.  On a first date, you barely find out what a person likes to drink much less their medical history.  For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  If you sleep around without consideration of your own health, you should not be shocked when your health is effected.

My divorced sister still goes out to the bars with her friends sometimes. She doesn't sleep around, but she told me that the whole "hookup" scene is still running rampant.

I guess I'm glad I was raised in the "old" morality. Either that or I'm just a germophobe freak, but never in my life could I imagine just having sex with a complete stranger. I think it's repulsive.

By preaching that it's okay, the left is also destroying the institution of marriage, because I seriously doubt that anyone is interested in committing to someone that has already been with hundreds of partners by the age of 25. Marriage is only important to the left when gay people want to do it, otherwise it's stupid and old fashioned.

It seems more like a way to collect DNA samples.

Whey you get past 50 or 60 they take blood samples for everything.

I feel like a pincushion,   At my age they run a average of 9 tests a year on me, looking for something wrong.

I just had an MRI done on my head, I got a copy of it sent to me on disk, so I could see what they saw.
Kind of strange seeing your own brain, but the accompanying letter from the clinic said "Unremarkable"...

Unremarkable? The fact that I didn't see any unused space in there made a liar out of Toy.
