Elfie - I just got my new "Hot Water Bath Canner".  Looks just like the one my Mom used.  I ordered a kit from Lehman's and got a decent deal.  For $59 I got..

Ball Guide to Canning and Freezing
Black Grannyware Canner (21.5 quart)
Jar Lifter
Stainless Wide-mouth Funnel
and 12 - 1 quart canning Jars with lids

My sister told me that the Canner alone was going for $50 at WalMart.

Once I get brave enough with this I will order a Pressure Canner.

ST I think you will love it.   Some people do not move on to Pressure Canner, but if you do you will love it also.  We have two of the big Pressure Canner.  In all we have 6 Pressure cooker now from over the years of canning.  We use one of our pressure cooker 2 or 3 time a month for cooking a full dinners.  You got a good deal on your first set-up.  Don't let Solar use it for cleaning parts.  lol

Thanks for sharing the canning site. My parents still can a lot of their own fruits and vegetables using a pressure canner. Those are great, if you know how to use them safely.

Walks - my Mom canned using both the water bath and pressure canner (It was big.)  I always remember being told to stay out of the kitchen while it was going.  Could explain the unfounded fear I have of it.  I have a basic pressure cooker I've had for years.  Makes the best beef stew.  Toy :smile:

Makes a great Pot Roast inless then 1hr. also.   The old pressure cooker did not have the safety devices the new ones have now.   I find most people do not take the time and learn how to use a pressure cooker right.  Once up to pressure it does not take much heat to keep it going at the right pressure.  We have two that can be set at 5, 10, or 15 lbs.   I use 15 lbs for Pot Roast and 5 lbs for fresh vegetables.

Nope Elfie I haven't for many years.  Long story short....  Young country girl leaves the Midwest and moves to the big city; loses touch with all her roots;  after almost 30 years meets mountain man; falls in love and moves back to the country; finally starts to recover all her long lost roots;

All of my sisters still can and put stuff up from their gardens.  They are all thrilled that I am finally picking this skill back up.  My daughters are already putting in their orders.   :smile: :cool:
