I have been reading up a little on winter vegetables to plant.  Has anyone here done that and what kind of vegetables do you find work best?  We do get snow and according to Solar we will probably have a snowy winter.

I really would like to plant asparagus but don't know how to start.  Internet here I come.

I live in a different climate (NE Louisiana) but some of the same principals apply.

1. Asparagus isn't a winter crop. At least not that I have ever heard.

2. For a winter garden think green, leafy veggies and root crops. Spinach  and lettuce work really well. Carrots, radishes, turnips and garlic all work well too. Potatos need warmer weather so they are more of a spring crop than a winter crop. Just put a nice bed of pine straw over your plants and try not to water them just before a freeze. Other than that, it's pretty simple since you don't have the same insect and weed problems you have in the warmer months.
If you believe big government is the solution then you are a liberal. If you believe big government is the problem then you are a conservative.

Thanks for the advice Dan.  Lots for me to think about.  Solar is predicting more snow this year than last year so I am torn on what I want to do.  :)

Hm. Dan's right, ST, think root veggies and green leafy ones. We're planting mustard greens, collards, rutabeggars (sp?), and some others, but we're in a different climate. Not sure about snow and such tho.... :-\

A greenhouse is always a nice thing for a gardener if you can afford it. The bigger the better.

Use a black, removable ground cloth for extra heat but be carefull on warmer days.

I've used this company before and have been satisfied with them.

If it was easy everyone would be do'in it.

I've got 4 raised beds in my back yard. I think I'm going to shape them up and plant them in time for a winter garden this year.
