Cuba Will Save The World: The Cuban Medicine Has Released The First World Vaccine Against Lung Cancer

Quote
Pretty big news comes from the island nation known for the quality of its cigars. This news is already making big noise in the western medical world. Xinhua reports that Cuban medical authorities have released the first therapeutic vaccine for lung cancer. In Cuba, 20,000 people die each year of lung cancer. It is the leading cause of death in 12 of the 15 Cuban provinces.

CimaVax-EGF is the result of a 25-year research project at Havana’s Center for Molecular Immunology, and it could make a life or death difference for those facing late-stage lung cancers, researchers there say.

Late stage cancer vaccine?
If it sounds too good to be true?
Vaccines work as a preventative measure, not after the fact, so this is either an outright lie, or extremely bad reporting.

I had the same thought when I read the headline so I had to look it up.  A vaccine can refer to anything that causes the body to start making antibodies, and that's what they claim this does.

CimaVax-EGF isn’t a vaccine in the preventative sense-that is, it doesn’t prevent lung cancer from taking hold in new patients. It’s based on a protein related to uncontrolled cell proliferation-that is, it doesn’t prevent cancer from existing in the first place but attacks the mechanism by which it does harm.

As such it can turn aggressive later-stage lung cancer into a manageable chronic disease by creating antibodies that do battle with the proteins that cause uncontrolled cell proliferation, researchers say. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are still recommended as a primary means of destroying cancerous tissue, but for those showing no improvement the new vaccine could be a literal lifesaver.

Could be legit.  Will be interesting to see if it actually comes to the US, lung cancer is one of the more scary ones.

Nah, it don't work that way, no vaccine does, they build an antibody defense before the attack, never after the effect.

Besides, if this was as true at the article assigns, considering it's been 5 years since Cuba first made the claim, then why isn't the rest of the world seeing the same results?

You're wrong there.  These therapeutic vaccines don't cure or prevent the disease, but they work to help the body fight it.  I'm just saying the concept isn't preposterous like landing on the sun, no idea if this one is real.

Therapeutic Vaccines

A therapeutic vaccine is a relatively new immune-based approach that differs from a preventive, or prophylactic, vaccine in that it is not used to prevent infection, but is given to people who already have a disease. One goal of an effective therapeutic vaccine is to strengthen the immune systems of people infected with HIV, enabling their bodies to better fight the virus and lessen their need for antiretroviral therapy. A therapeutic HIV vaccine could theoretically be given during early infection to delay the initiation of antiretroviral therapy and reduce the risk of transmission; during chronic infection to lessen or eliminate the need for antiretroviral therapy; or in cases of advanced disease to slow disease progression and prolong survival.

No, I'm staying on the subject of the articles headline.
"Cuba Will Save The World: The Cuban Medicine Has Released The First World Vaccine Against Lung Cancer"
Which turned out to be a complete fabrication/bald faced lie.
If this had the promise they lay claim to, why has it been more than 5 years and people are still dying from lung cancer?

Restricting a conversation to a sensationalized news headline seems a poor choice.  By those rules, sure, I'll concede that this isn't going to save the world.  Honestly, I'm not sure why you would trust any headline when it comes to science reporting.

As for why so long... two reasons.

1. Drugs take a long time to be developed, tested and approved.
2. It's Cuba.  There are politics.  Not everything gets released.  Until very recently we couldn't import it even if we wanted to.

Canada is currently running a clinical trial:
http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/content/92/13/1037.full

Also remember nobody is claiming it's a cure.  It's a treatment that helps you live a bit longer.

Again, I have no idea if it works.  Just saying it's not a preposterous idea.

Which is exactly why the ridicule the article has received, because Cuba made the claim of cure, as they did years ago when they first released it.
Had you simply posted a different article espousing promise in the drug, no one would have blinked.
The title exposes this for what it is.

Edit: My bad, I thought you posted the article.

Cuba has become the first country to eliminate the transmission of HIV and syphilis from mother to baby, the World Health Organisation has announced.

The WHO’s director general, Margaret Chan, said it was “one of the greatest public health achievements possible” and an important step towards an Aids-free generation.

Over the past five years, Caribbean countries have had increased access to antiretroviral drugs as part of a regional initiative to eliminate mother-to-child transmission.

The article is 6 months old and yet the MSM has not pick-up on it yet.  This must be one of those "a sucker born every minute" shams.
