Cooking...no helpers. How hard?

Solars Toy

How far would you go to improve your health?  I keep reading about eating a more natural diet.  Fresh fruits and vegetables, leaner cuts of meat.   I guess going back to a time when we ate to live rather than living to eat. 

I am mulling this around in my mind as a challenge to myself - yes Solar would be dragged along - to try and simplify my cooking.  Using less of the helpers (boxed, frozen and canned) and more of the in season real food.   Meanwhile I will keep looking for and keeping the ideas and recipes I find. 

If anyone already does this or has tried it in the past tell me how it works and the main challenges you  faced.

We started eating this way about one year back.  As I am a diabetic now (old age diabetic) so it is not a challenge for us it is now a way of life so we now eat to live rather than living to eat.  We both love cooking so it was a big change for us at first.    No boxed, can food or microwave oven foods.  The big change for us is eating 3 times a day at set times. (give or take an Hr.)
Oh and it will be great for the young man in your life ST.

We started eating this way about one year back.  As I am a diabetic now (old age diabetic) so it is not a challenge for us it is now a way of life so we now eat to live rather than living to eat.  We both love cooking so it was a big change for us at first.    No boxed, can food or microwave oven foods.  The big change for us is eating 3 times a day at set times. Oh and it will be great for the young man in your life ST.

Any advice would be welcome.  Somedays are better than others - then there is that chocolate thing for me....

It seems it would be easier to cook this way but during the week I work and by the time you tack on my commute I am gone from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm.   Don't always feel like trying to cook when I get home.   

How about your top 5 things that helped you get there.  Tell the Good Woman I appreciate the help. :)

Well it seems tough at first but once you get into the routine it really isn't much more work.  I make everything from scratch. 90 percent of what we eat is fresh. That way I can control the fat and sodium content, not to mention no additives of any kind. If you're even remotely competent in the kitchen you can eat like this.

I try to for meats and poultry. I'm not as strict when it comes to produce.

Wise man Bert, the toxic ingredients in produce as compared to meat are night and day in comparison.
After working as a cowboy on a cattle ranch, I can tell ya, never under cook meat, some of the best cuts can be poisoned with antibiotics, amounts that most humans never get in a lifetime.
But many get these injections 100 times of a human just to keep them alive, so they make it to slaughter.

If it bleeds on the plate, it could be hazardous to your health or you future children.

About ten years ago, when I was age 50, I began to eat less meat, more fish and more vegetables. Steamed mostly, or in soups. I eat a lot of fish and am especially fond of sushi, which in my corner of the world is abundant and very fresh as well as relatively cheap.

I found that my weight control was much improved, so is my health, blood pressure et al, no diabetes yet, despite the fact I've somewhat of a sweet tooth.

Raised meat and potato but have learned to like fish so that is definitely an option.

The important thing is to eliminate as much fat and sugar from your diet, also to exercise, it doesn't have to be an olympic work out, even going for a walk will help.

Solar had bought me an exercise bike.  I began riding every morning for a about 6 weeks.  Ended up with extreme pain in my hip.  Dr and Chiropractor both said I had pulled/hurt my IT band and not to ride the bike anymore.  Can't take morning walks - mountain liions, coyotes and bears.  I am walking a work... :)  Now just need to eat better.  Thanks for the advice. :) :) :)
