Antibiotics

I've been reading a bit about veterinary grade antibiotics and antibiotics available for animals that can be purchased over the counter. There seems to be a wide spread of opinion as to whether it's a good idea for humans to use them. Debates rage over whether they're "pure enough" and what sort of carriers are used to get the medicine where it needs to be.

Does anybody have any reliable info about the subject?

I asked my vet and she told me in most cases there is no difference, except in large animals, horses, cattle etc.
She also said it is common practice for vets to use out dated products, they get a discount on them.
But she did say there is absolutely no difference, just in the labeling.

I've read a lot of posts that claimed the stuff for large animals -- horses, cattle, etc. -- should be avoided because of the "inert" stuff in each dose, the carrier material. Supposedly they're different for animals and not well tolerated or downright dangerous for people. But nobody seems to have any details about this. The gist is that the actual active ingredient is exactly the same, and pharmacy-grade, but not the non-active ingredients.

The most positive comments I've seen are for the products designed for fish, if you can believe that. I did not know that fish got infected with anything or could benefit from antibiotics. No, you don't give a tiny pill to each individual fish... What were you thinking?  :P :P :P :P These antibiotics are usually sold in capsule or dissolving tablet form, to be dropped in the water.

At least I haven't read of anyone being sickened by taking the vet meds. Many swear by them and claim that they're just as effective as the human sort, except they're comparable or cheaper in cost and -- the big one -- can be had without a doctor's (or veterinarian's) prescription. So many of the arguments I've seen against using pet meds say, "Well you can get a dose of penicillin at Walmart for $4; why take a chance?" The obvious comeback to that is, "Who will write me a prescription?" My doctor charges $68 for an office visit, even if it's just for a quick exam and a scrip. That's $72 for one "human dose" (two tabs a day for seven days, fourteen tabs total). I can buy a hundred 500mg tabs of, say, amoxicillin (for fish) for less than $30 on the internet. That works out to about seven "human doses" at around $4 per dose TOTAL COST.

I really hate the suppository for fish...

With that out of the way, I have a cabinet full of differing antibiotics.
So when the doc says I'll write you a script for that infection, I say don't bother I have this, this and this at home.
He then explains how every infection is different, and that I just might slow it down, allowing it to build an immunity, making it harder to treat with something stronger.

With the way bacteria is strengthening, I wouldn't want to chance it, but then, I get doctor visits and scripts for free, so I just take what they give me.

Holy cowski, sign me up for your club! If I was getting free scripts and doctor visits, I wouldn't be looking at fish pills.  :P :P :P

Oh boy. Does Toy know about this? It's the kind of thing currents should know about exes, I should think. (When I think.)

My guess is she's got shoulders just broad enough to carry the load... and not one millimeter broader than they need to be.  ;) :D :P :P :P

I haven't seen her in more than 20 years, but every time a dark cloud casts a shadow, I look to make sure it isn't her sneaking up on me from behind. :o :))

Captain Ahab of the California mountains. Yeah, right.  :P :P :P Let's see, we can call her Moby, uh, Moby.... um, Moby Foot, no... Moby... well, let's just call her Moby and forget about any last name that might be a reference to a body part.

My uncle is a vet and he practices on himself quite often and since he is also the pharmacist, he writes and fills his own prescriptions. He used to also treat my grandmother on a regular basis. I think she took horse meds only once that I can recall. I do not recall why she took any horse medication. It must have worked wonderfully. There were not any estranged side effects.

And yes, he is  a quite competent DVM.
