Title: Your business must optimize for social networking in the bathroom
Post by: Juliana_27 on December 12, 2012, 09:44:31 PM
You know that your business should indulge consumers via online social networking - it's inescapable. But do you know where and how many people are taking in your marketing message? Think in terms of restroom reading, notes USA Today. Social networking in the bathroom - consumed via one of the many types of mobile devices - is your path to reaching your customers where they do their thinking.

Young customers in the bathroom

It must be true that Americans care significantly about social media if they are willing to take it with them in the restroom, which is one of the most private places an individual can go. The amount of time on social networking increased 37 percent over last year, according to a United States online social networking penetration study done by the firm NM Incite. It also found that 23 percent of the top social networkers use Facebook and Twitter mostly when they are in the bathroom. This consists of any person ages 18 to 24.

Quote"Social media is truly everywhere in people's lives," said NM Incite Vice President of Social media Solutions, Deirdre Bannon. "It is so ingrained and has touched every facet of everything we do all day long. We are literally taking our phones with us to the bathroom and connecting on social media."

Every person does it in the restroom

Not only are young consumers consuming social media in the restroom, but more than a quarter (28 percent) of people 25 to 34 use Twitter in the restroom, too. Customers aged 35 to 44 are using social networking in the restroom at a lesser but still significant 15 percent clip. In the study, it doesn't appear to matter whether the user is male or female, both are equally likely to tear through their social media plate while in repose.

Utilizing it at work

Bannon explained that 51 percent of those ages 25 to 32 are connected to online social media while at work. People are "always on" at work.

Quote"They are tapping into that exponentially broader universe to get information about products, events and brands. It has both the social component, as well as the informational aspect," Bannon said.

These are important things for advertisers to know if they will make any cash. Make sure you keep in mind that of the 200,000 subjects in the NM Incite study, about a third said they spend most of their time on the internet on their phone. In 2012, Pinterest, Wordpress and Tumblr became more essential, but Twitter and Facebook are still the driving sources for social networking. People are spending time on their phones in the restroom on Facebook, so make sure you know the best way to advertise your site to that crowd.

Good points  Juliana and welcome to the forum.

It's interesting that you would bring this up just now, because just the other day I was looking at google stats for the forum, and around 2/3rds of our traffic comes from cell phones.

Not so much that we need to target them, because most really don't like taking the time to type out a long response on a teeny tiny keyboard.

I think once technology changes to where speech to text is reliable, we will increase our numbers by a factor of 2.

I used to be one of those people who was never going to get a smartphone. Now I've completely forgotten how I ever lived without it.

Which is why I never use mine.
Like all these things, they can become an addiction. When a friend went into a panic over losing his phone, I then and there I would never start.

I have an Iphone, but I only use it for Iheart radio/pandora and I take it with me in the truck, but never turn it on.

Personally I hate being interrupted unless it's an emergency, there just ibsn't anything so pressing in my life, that they can't leave me a message at home.

I guess I just became my dad.

Yeah, once you fall into the trap, there's no getting out till you die.

If it's really really important, write it down, stick it in an envelope and stick a stamp on it, I'll get it.

LOL  I only go to the post office about once every two or three months.   Our State Patrol tells me I can not have a drivers license if I don't have a mail box.   The State Patrol tell me that my fiscale address does not exist  LOL

UPS has no problems finding my fiscale address at all.

I'd bet GPS or google earth could find you as well.

I moved here to get the Hell away from people, I really didn't even want a physical address, but the lady at the county office said "How else are they going to find you to give you a tax bill"?
I said, I see you missed my point.

I think with the GPS you would need the coordinates.  (Latitude & Longitude)  As there is no street names.
