1500% markup is not surviving Solar.

That markup is not even a thought today when consumers are chasing their wants. In the past a 20 percent profit margin was considered good business and acceptable by the producer and consumer. People have been so conditioned they don't even consider what there money is really buying. They only want what they want when they want it. It is almost like spending has become a compulsive behavior.

I am not blaming corporations. I know a business's goal is to generate profit. I am blaming stupid people that don't consider what they are actually getting for their money allowing others to take advantage of them. Especially when that stupidity is destroying our economy and enriching another.

Paying high taxes on foreign manufactured goods marked up 1500% (there is a good example of that the leach/host symbiotic relationship between business and govt you were talking about)  IS damaging our economy Solar. I am sorry you can't see that.

Quote from: Solar on June 16, 2016, 02:53:27 PMIf your contention is that Unions are not solely responsible for wage increases, you would be correct, but allowing govt to artificially set wage standard above the value of the free mkt, as driven by Union wage increases via the Dim party, then you are missing the entire picture.
Solar I am not missing anything. I understand socialist manipulation of the economy. I had my job held hostage and my wages set by a UNION. You don't have to tell me how setting wages damages work ethic, quality, and potential earnings. I lived it for 12 years. With all due respect you and everyone else on here are missing MY point. I am not talking about behavior of the corporations. I am talking about a "consumer" American population that foolishly spends money with no thought of value, where there money is going, or what it is being used for. They buy simply because they want. Very few people attempt to spend responsibly. If you don't think what I am saying is true look at the average debt load a citizen carries while stuffing there homes full of useless Chinese made "toys" vs. savings or retirement.

Quote from: Solar on June 16, 2016, 02:53:27 PMbut something tells me you would rather blame corporations.
Not really.

Quote from: Solar on June 16, 2016, 02:53:27 PMTruth is, it's the leach/host symbiotic relationship between business and govt, where govt sets artificial rules of free mkt and the consumer suffers, all because people are too damned stupid and keep putting socialists in power.
Truth.

Like libtards in Philly adding 1.5 cents PER OUNCE on sugar sweetened, artificially sweetened, and diet beverages in an attempt to "correct" people.

Quote from: Hoofer on June 16, 2016, 03:42:20 PMYeah, it's called hi-jacking a thread.  This belongs in the financial section, not the political section.
You don't think people being conditioned to spend spend spend themselves into financial debt satisfying their wants with no regard for their future or the future of the country while paying outrageous taxes to a bunch of socialist on a product marked up 1500% is a political issue?

You say I am trying to Hijack the thread.

I say this whole environment of careless spending started with the Boomers when they started buying cheap imported "toys". I can honestly say I never saw much of that from the "greatest generation".

Do you know what you get when you mix socialism, careless spending, debt load, and high taxes?

You get a future of dependency.

Think about that then tell me it is not political or relevant to the thread topic.

I used to work with 32% profit margin, and when that ended, I retired nearly 20 years ago.
And guess why? Because markets were tightening, competition was getting fierce, the govt was changing all the rules infavor of leftist corporate crony America.

Correct, Green energy is a perfect example of the socialist crony govt interfering with the free mkt.

This only happens in a few cases, most of industry tries and avoid govbvt by staying below the radar, because as soon as govt gets involved, the free mkt is destroyed in that particular area.

And how is that corporations problem? No one held a gun to their heads, no one forced them to buy inferior products.

Again, how is this to be blamed on corporations? I suggest you study the govt manipulation and interference of the sugar mkt, then note that only recently the soda makers rebelled against corn sweeteners and went back to using full on sugar.
And now suddenlly, we're weeing govt retribution against soda, Berzerkley is doing the same thing.
See a connection anywhere?

Much of this can be laid squarely at the feet of Nixon and the Establishment with deregulation of the banks and removing us from the gold standard, just about the time the Boomers got the vote, but it wasn't us who manipulated the party Establishment, no, that was the WWII generation that removed Conservatives from the party and gave us the new leftist GOP we're stuck with today..

I thought I made myself very clear I was not criticizing American corporations.

I will repeat myself again. I NEVER made any comment, suggestive or otherwise, that I BLAME corporations.

I was criticizing American spending habits and our "buy now pay later" mentality.

Of course not all companies pull that high of a percentage of profit. That is an extreme case. However it is useful to prove my point.

You are so gung-ho to defend free market against what you perceive as an attack from me that you are getting tunnel vision. You are not even listening to what I am saying.

However when an American buyer (AND TAXPAYER!!!!!!) pays such a large markup (and the TAXES that go along with it) without even a consideration of actual value vs. cost that is an irresponsible spending habit that has been perpetuated by a socialist agenda.

That is why I have a friend bragging about his $800 dollar iPhone even though I can do everything he can do on my 75 dollar Windows Phone. He is bragging about buying an overpriced product (mostly manufactured in China) that he plans on replacing as soon as the next model is available simply for the "prestige" of owning the latest Apple product.

He could care less about value, price, function, usability, resale value..... all he cares about is "looking cool" because that is where our culture is headed?

He spent $800 (having a low paying retail job mind you) on something he will consider trash (even though it still works perfectly) as soon as the next model hits shelves. Or at least that is the pattern he has followed in the past.

When that behavior is so prevalent in our society you don't think that is a problem?

Mark my words........those people are future dependents and victims of the Democratic Party.

You don't think this is a political issue? You might to rethink that Solar.

OK, so what are you going to do about it? How do you discourage people from buying cheap imports?

No, in fact I don't. These people generally come around in their late 30s at the latest.
It's time memoriam, teenagers think with their hormones, 20 something males view the world jockeying position through physical strength, 30ish through 40s begin to see finance as a better tool for negotiating life, meaning they grow out of foolishly buying things they think make them look older and cool and focus on investment, homes, business, entrepreneurism.

In other words, they are shortcutting the process and spending beyond their means in an effort to appear financially independent. He wants to appear older and more successful than he is , just like the kid shaving for the first time despite the fact he only just started to show some facial hair, he too wants to shortcut life and leap ahead and brag to his friends that he shaves now.
Thing is, they haven't the historical perspective that comes with the next two decades of life, so they do stupid things trying to shortcut lifes experience.
Give them time, every generation comes of age, it's why all children are born liberal idealists, and adults become Conservative later in life, simply because they eventually grow up.

Well this guy is in his late 30's so he better hurry it up.

He has no home, no education (beyond high school), no prospects, no woman, no retirement, and no ambition.

He has a "cool" phone though.........

Maybe he does want to look more successful. That illusion will not last when he picks his date up in an old beat up car and takes her to his single bedroom efficiency apartment because he can't afford to do anything else but hang out and watch movies at home........

Hey, at least it's not moms basement. The fact that he has his own place puts him ahead of 40%+ of Millennial living with their parents.
Yeah, I knew these same guys growing up in the 60s, and honestly, they're still the same people they were back then, parents left them an inherited home and car and that's where they'll die, with the 1980s Ford PU.
But the ones that were trying to keep up with the Joneses so to speak, actually made something of themselves.
It's the partiers and dope smokers that to this day simply exist from paycheck to paycheck still voting for the dim party out of stupidity.

I think I am getting your point ......kinda. Most people do not know what to do with money, if they have it, they feel they need to spend it. They do not see the benefits of saving or letting your money work for you, or how if you are somewhat thrifty your money working for you can make more than you working for you. For these people there is a dim future, but they will vote for the lib...................... Damn, you could substitute "our government" for "most people" and the above sentence would still work.

My Dad was born in 1913 and began his working career during the depression. He got a job that never paid him more than $20K and he stayed with that firm for forty years. Obviously, we did not have an elaborate lifestyle, but we were comfortable. He instilled in me the importance and value of having a job. Therefore, I missed being a "baby boomer", but I understand why some "boomers" may have become lazy. Parents from my generation worked very hard to make our lives better and they spoiled many kids by wanting for them to have a better life than had. I see this as the beginning of pandering to kids to make things better for them. Now, 60-70 later we see the fruits of those efforts and they are not good.

I've never understood that mentality. My dad wanted my life to be just as hard as his, so as to appreciate what I eventually accomplish on my own.
Yes, he rode my ass all the time, I thought my actual name was dumb ass for the longest time, and lost the idea of free time at 13, till I moved out, knew teenagers would look for trouble if left to their own devices.

My kids were extremely lucky so they say.  They had to earn and save 60% for what they were asking for after that I would pay the last 40%.  To this day they do the same for there kids.  They say they have move up in there world as they know how to work and get thing done.  When you don't need some one standing over you 8 to 10 hours a day everyday, you move up fast.
