Obama's EPA Cuts Off Trump, Locks In Auto Mileage Standards Early

Yeah, that's the claim, but how stupid do they take us for? Trump can essentially gut the EPA and there's not a damn thing they can do about it.


The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday that it's keeping vehicle efficiency standards intact through the 2025 model year, a surprise move that will make it harder for Donald Trump's incoming administration to reverse them.

Days before President Obama leaves office, the EPA said that no big changes are necessary in greenhouse gas standards for cars and light-duty trucks.

"At every step in the process the analysis has shown that the greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars and light trucks remain affordable and effective through 2025, and will save American drivers billions of dollars at the pump while protecting our health and the environment," EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said in a statement.

Automakers had expected the review to last months longer so there would be time for additional debate. The final determination wasn't due until April 2018.

Americans have been buying lower-mileage SUVs and trucks — which are much more profitable for automakers — with gas prices so low. (Ford Motor (F) recently scrapped a planned Mexico plant, mollifying the protectionist Trump, but largely because small car demand has fallen.)  Automakers said that will make it harder to achieve the fuel standards. They must boost their fleetwide fuel economy to a 50.8 miles per gallon average by 2025, from 35.3 mpg now. Real world fuel economy will rise to 36 mpg by the 2025 model year from about 26 mpg today.

"The EPA decision is disappointing. Our fundamental priority remains striking the right balance to continue fuel economy gains and carbon reduction without compromising consumer affordability and vital auto-sector jobs," said the Auto Alliance, which represents 12 major automakers.

The EPA said it could have raised the fuel mileage requirements, but refrained to "provide regulatory certainty for the auto industry."

Yep, they just don't get it. If there's no one to enforce the rules, then there's essentially no rules to enforce.
