Please excuse the personal reference.

My son worked on a landscaping crew for about four years in late high school and early college. He liked the profession so much he changed his college major to landscape architecture from business. Now he is a regional manager for a landscape supply company. It all started with grunt work under 20.

Thanks for sharing that, supsalemgr.  That is a wonderful story of success.  Congratulation to your son!

Do you have other kids?

Sharing personal stories can be very encouraging to others.  You have obviously done a good job of parenting.

Had a daughter who fought depression for many years and we lost her about five years ago at age 37. Fortunately, the father of her two sons took on the responsibility of a single parent. They are doing well.

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss, supsalemgr.  That is a devastating experience for your family.  The hurt never goes away. ..... depression is a horrible thing.  It is unfortunate that she was never able to find a medical solution.

I hope you are able to spend time with your grandsons.  I lost my Mom when I was ten years old and I can tell you that grandparents can be a critical emotional support for the kid.  They internalize far more than people realize.

You have endured much...  God bless..

Not as much as I would like since they 500 miles away. However, I did attend my youngest's HS graduation this past May.

Thanks for your concern.

Yeah, anyone with any sense knows when you are on your own, no job is below you.
You're right, she is the quintessential spoiled brat.
I took every job offered me as a kid, I turned sown nothing, from mowing lawns at 9 and working every summer till I entered the army, which was a much easier job than the summers I sent busting my ass.

There are millions of jobs available to kids, and even farm labor, which pays a damn good wage if one is willing to work, but for some reason this generation didn't get the work ethic our parents instilled in us.

The best advice my dad gave me when I started working, was show up early, be ready to work and do as you're asked and you'll never be without work.
He was spot on, because it was the kids that came in on time, then burned 7 minutes getting ready to work that were always the first canned.

I instilled this in my employees, be here ready to work, I don't pay you to come in, get dressed, BS, then start work 7 to 10 minutes later.

On-time means being at the place of work and ready to work not just coming in on one's scheduled time.

This is how I would get to work on-time.

a.  make sure you walk in 15 min early.
b.  make sure you are in the general area 45 min before the 15 min.
c.  I need 7-9 hrs of sleep.
d.  give my self 1 hour of wake up time
e.  45 min for shower
f.   30 min to get a quick bite, brush my teeth and floss
g.   give myself the time it takes to get there plus an half hour (bad traffic)
h.  Let's say I need to be at work at 9 and it takes me 45 min to get there.  I would need to get up by 4 or 5 am therefore I would need to go to bed at about 7-9 pm give or take.
i.  modify as needed.

Depends on what you do for work.

b.  make sure you are in the general area 45 min before the 15 min.
You just wasted 45 min of your life.

c.  I need 7-9 hrs of sleep.
You just wasted 3 to 4 hours of your life.

d.  give my self 1 hour of wake up time
Why you can do that taking your shower.

e.  45 min for shower
Learn to shower in cold water you wake up a lot faster and don't waste time and water.

f.   30 min to get a quick bite, brush my teeth and floss
Breakfast should be your main meal for the day.

g.   give myself the time it takes to get there plus an half hour (bad traffic)
Know the side roads.

h.  Let's say I need to be at work at 9 and it takes me 45 min to get there.  I would need to get up by 4 or 5 am therefore I would need to go to bed at about 7-9 pm give or take.
Why do you waste so much of your life sleeping?  I find 4 to 5 hrs max is all I need, you waste as much time getting up and going to work as I do sleeping.

i.  modify as needed.
Know what need to be done for the next day before going to bed.  You can always adjust the next day if needed.  It give you time to enjoy life when you control your life.

When I was a senior I took a math class that covered a lot of basic things, including interest and money.  I think every student needs to pass a class on about money, how credit cards work, savings, interest, taxes, etc so a kid coming out of HS knows a bit more about the real world.  However this might cause them to question many liberal things.

When I was in 8th grade we spent an entire 6 week period studying about household finances. Some of the exercises we participated in included the entire class making up a months worth of meals for a hypothetical family of 4: breakfast, lunch, dinner.  Then the teacher put it all on a mimeo sheet, handed it out, and our homework was to go out to the grocery stores and price the cost of the month's groceries.  We also learned how to write checks and balance a checking account ledger, all of whcih was contained in a workbook. We also built a budget, again for that family of 4, searching newspapers for apartments and also for houses. We built 2 budgets, one which contained rent, one which had a mortgage.  We then compared our hypothetical budget to the employment classifieds, and found we had to make a WHOLE bunch of cuts, ended up looking at used cars instead of having a new car payment, downsized to a 2 bedroom home or apartment and bunk beds, etc.  Most of us in the class, though being typical egocentric teens of the time, still managed to recognize the value of that 6 week period in our social studies class.

I guess public education decided practical knowledge takes away too much time from their LGBT equality courses.

Wow, you were one lucky kid, we never had such an exercise, though I do remember some girls discussing a similar assignment in homec class, but boys weren't allowed in their classes.
