San Jose, California-based Cisco is expected to announce the cuts within the next few weeks, the report said, as the company transition from its hardware roots into a software-centric organization.

Apart from Cisco, two other big software companies, Microsoft Corp and HP Inc, have also announced job cuts this year.

Amazing....  and Cisco makes the biggest, baddest router that can take multiple 100Gbit pipes and barely break a sweat.  One of these monsters takes up almost an entire relay rack, you could use the hot air exhaust as a hair dryer - quite a nice looking unit.  We see these units taking direct 100Gbit waves from transport gear, and spreading it out to Juniper and other aggregation type routers (10Gbit stuff), before it hits the servers.

Microsoft maybe laying off software folks, but the datacenter business is booming, and expanding rapidly - but!.... they're moving to contract labor to staff them with minimal Microsoft staffing.  Microsoft's goal is to become the largest and fastest data centers in the world ... Their Data Center in Boydton, VA is 'nestled' on 500 acres, they jokingly talk of measuring computing power in "megawatts".

HP has spun off HPE, (Enterprise) and they're also expanding... their data center presence.
