If you have a newer model Subaru Legacy or Outback, stop right now.

The automaker is recalling more than 48,500 vehicles over a potential steering column defect so serious, they shouldn't even be driven to a mechanic.

The recall, which began Friday, affects 2016-17 Legacies and Outbacks manufactured between Feb. 29 and May 6, according to announcements from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and on Subaru's website.

A Message to Our Valued Owners:

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2016 and 2017 model year Legacy and Outback vehicles.

The steering column in your vehicle may not have been manufactured to specification. An incorrect tool setting during the manufacturing process may have resulted in improper machining of one of the steering column shafts. If this condition exists, turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels, increasing the risk of a crash.

Your vehicle is not safe to drive if this potential defect is present.

WTD-65 FAQs:

Q: What should I do?
A: Please contact your retailer (dealer) as soon as possible to make arrangements to have your vehicle towed to their facility, at no cost to you, and inspected. If the inspection determines that the defect is not present, the vehicle will be safe to drive. If the defect is found, the steering column will be replaced.

Please do not drive your car until it has been inspected and, if necessary, the recall repair has been performed.

If you prefer to make alternative arrangements for having your vehicle towed to your retailer, you may contact the Subaru Roadside Assistance Program at 1-800-261-2155.

For your convenience, your retailer will provide you a loaner or rental vehicle at no cost until your car has been repaired.

Q: What will be done to the vehicle?
A: Subaru will inspect the lot number on the steering column in your vehicle to determine if it needs to be replaced. If replacement is necessary, a new steering column will be installed in your vehicle. The inspection and possible replacement will be performed at no cost to you.

Q: What Subaru models are involved?
A: Certain 2016 and 2017 model year Legacy and Outback vehicles.

Q: Do I need to make an appointment?
A: Yes. Please contact your servicing Subaru retailer as soon as possible to make arrangements to have your vehicle towed to their facility.

Q: How much will this recall cost?
A: This recall will be performed free of charge at any authorized Subaru retailer.

Q: Do I have to return to the retailer where I bought the car?
A: Any authorized Subaru retailer will be able to perform this recall free of charge for you.

Q: Can I have this recall performed at an independent repair facility?
A: Only an authorized Subaru retailer can perform this recall free of charge for you.

Q: If I live in Canada do I have to return to the United States to have this performed?
A: Any authorized Subaru dealership in either the United States or Canada is capable of performing this recall.

Q: How long will this repair take?
A: The time to inspect the lot number to determine if your steering column needs to be replaced is approximately 10 minutes. If the steering column needs to be replaced, the repair will take approximately one hour. However, it may be necessary to leave your vehicle for a longer period of time on the day of your scheduled appointment to allow your Subaru retailer flexibility in scheduling.

Q: Q: If I no longer own the vehicle what should I do?
A: If you no longer own your vehicle, please update owner information online, at www.subaru.com/customer-support.html, by selecting Email Us then selecting Update Address from the drop down menu.

Your continued satisfaction with your Subaru is important to us. Please understand that we have taken this action in the interest of your safety and your vehicle.s proper operation. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this matter may cause and urge you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to have this repair performed.

I see a serious CYA effort. I bet they got some legal advice that Subaru's ass is in sever jeopardy.

Yeah, ONLY when it's REALLY, REALLY serious they do something.

This is a class-action lawsuit over excessive oil consumption - don't laugh - 2011~2015 vehicles (varies a bit)
If you have a Forester, Outback, Impreza, Crosstrek, Legacy of that vintage, adding oil at every gas station is routine.

Our Forester burns, throws or leaks a quart every 400-500 miles.... into the environment.  Yep, all those ADs of how environmentally friendly a Subaru is, and though we've complained to the dealer, they've replied, unless you can prove you've used Castrol Synthetic Oil of the proper weight at the right intervals - your warranty is already VOID.

It would appear Subaru has to get sued, or someone has to get injured before they acknowledge there might be a problem.  We buy oil by the gallon size, poke 2 holes through the foil cover and just keep dumping the stuff in.

I bought Toy a new 2013 Forester and it was burning oil, but once she hit 50 thousand miles, it quit burning altogether.
Guess it needed breaking in was all. Now she reaches the 7500 miles mark and it doesn't burn a drop.
I was pissed at first because it was burning 2 quarts every oil change, but she now has 90 thousand on it and it's been trouble free.

We traded in our 2010 Forester for a 2011 because it burned oil so bad, at 60K miles.  The 2011 has 140k and has burned oil from day one, it's in Subaru's DB as having an oil burning problem.

When this car dies, we'll be saying BYE to Subaru.  Their service between the 2 dealers in the area leaves much to be desired, both are very, very expensive, and if you do your own oil changes (they would not have you in their database), the warranty is VOIDED (yup, that's what they told us).   I guess that's what keeps your warranty alive, $180 oil & filter changes - but it's over at 36,000 miles, regardless of the problem (we were told).   Getting warranty work out of them - a joke.

Does Toy's Forester have an oil light?   Ours do not.   Check the oil every time you gas up.

I bought Wifey a 2015 Nissan Frontier, basic truck, with a 5 speed manual.  Doesn't have all the little niceities the Forester has, ride sucks, but it has a bigger "trunk", and doesn't burn oil.

Was that a typo? We usually pay about $29, or $19.0 when they send a coupon for oil change service.
And yes, there is an idiot light so to speak, not oil specific, but a warning when low, which hasn't happened in well over a year. It just quit burning oil completely.
I don't know if you have a lemon law in your state, but we do here in Ca, in fact, My neighbor was appointed as judge to the lemon law case by Reagan to adjudicate. (small world).
But if you're burning that much, there is currently a class action lawsuit taking place against Subaru, you may want to contact a lawyer and not a mechanic.

Oh, we were contacted by the lawyers already, got a thick packet in the mail.
They expect a judgment of $1500 per person... and you're suppose to have ALL your oil receipts.

$180 is not a typo.   Subaru dealerships in our area have a good thing going, and either you play ball with them, or the warranty is cancelled.

I could see it if they included a full tune up, plugs, wheel alignment and a full detail wash and wax.
That is a complete ripoff, our local dealer took our receipts from Jiffy lube and entered them in the computer as showing service, no questions asked.

$1500 is a good start, but nowhere near compensation for the headache.
