As a Norwegian, if you think moving to scandinavia will be easy for you you have another thing coming. Stay away from Norway is my suggestion at least. Norwegians are xenophobic and hate Americans, for real. You wont be able to get a job, Norwegians will almost exlusively hire other Norwegian people. Unless we are talking like bar and restaurant jobs, which you could eventually maybe get, but those are never full time.
Wages here are not that much higher than in America, but lord is our taxes. As a nurse I make 400 000 norwegian kroner a year, that is about 44 000 dollars. After taxes I make about 23 333 nok. 2500 dollars. Which probably doesnt sound too bad? Until you start getting into expenses. Rent is SO high , a 2 bedroom is about 1700 dollars. Yes you got that right. But that is in the city you might ask? Why yes it is. Why dont I just move outside the city and rent a bit cheaper?
Ok maybe outside the city I can find something to rent for 1000 dollars. Awesome! Oh wait, I have to have a car now. To buy a brand new car here is like 40 000 dollars, and Im not talking a big or a nice car. Just your basic car. You can get a used car for cheaper, but then there is repairs, which imagine what is also obcenely expensive in this country! So you have the monthly payment of your car loan , if you buy a reasonably priced used car that wont break down on you any second, 250 dollars Id say. Then you have to drive into work, cause there are no jobs outside the city here really, not if you want to go far enough away that you have cheaper rent. You have to pay toll money. Tollmoney could easily be another 400 dollars. Then there is gas. Gas in Norway is 3.7 times more expensive than in America! That adds up... In addition there is a yearly tax you pay to have a car.
Okayokay, maybe you want to buy a house you are thinking? Not without 55 000 dollars youre not, and that is for small apartment. Try saving up for that whilst paying 1700 dollars in rent... If you want a family you need an even larger downpayment than that. A one bedroom apartment here usually goes for around 2 million nok, so like 200 000 dollars. For a SMALL apartment.
And yeah almost forgot groceries, how much do you think the average Norwegian spends on food for a family of four? Hint, its a lot.
Like having fun?A six pack of beer costs at least 17 dollars, and thats the low quality stuff. And oh, you have to buy it before 8 on weekdays and 6 on saturdays. On sundays it isnt sold at all. If you want liquor or wine you got to go to the liqor store, which is only open till 6 on weekdays 3 on saturdays and not at all on sundays. And you american liberals like to complain chick fil a is closed on sundays, hah! Here a grocery store cant be open on sundays unless its sufficienly small.
Want to protect yourself? You cant even carry pepperspray or a tazor, or a knife. Somebody wants to rape you you are fair game
And Im quite serious when I say you cant get a job, my husband cant get a job here. You need to show experience, a certificate or have an education for EVERYTHING. Want to be a waitor? You can after trying hard for a long time, but they usually prefer people with a waitor education. YEs, education to be a waitor. Im not kidding. Its high school level. First two years of theory then two years of training in a business THEN you get to be a certified waitor. Want to clean dishes? You need to speak the language and also have 2 + years experience (again Im serious, that was spesifically mentioned in the job posting). Want to do something related to your actual education? Forget about it, everyone here has a masters. Grocery store is your best bet for a job in this country I guess, its the most common job and thats where all the people with their useless master education go to work. Ok, what about driving lyft, uber, or something? Nope thats banned here. You have to take a course for 6 weeks and pass a test to be a certified cab driver, and oh its all in Norwegian.
Want to make friends maybe? Your best bet as a foreigner is with other foreigners. Norwegians are shy and like to stick to their own. Which is why they also hire their own...
All the while 99.9% of Norwegians speak good English.
If you learn the language getting a job is a little bit easier but people will still deny you jobs or not even call you into interviews just from looking at your name.
Want to have children, its cheap in Norway right? Well daycare actually does cost around 400 dollars per child, which isnt that bad. BUT since the government foots part of the bill, guess what? They will be all up in your business about how to raise your child. If they feel like you arent cooparating with them they will call child protective services quick. We currently have 30 cases from Norway in EUs human rights Tribunal atm regarding Norwegian Child Protective services. A woman got asylum in Poland to escape them. Also you can only apply for daycares in march, so if you do get a job oppurtunity somewhere else than where you live and you have children? Good luck.

They are already have college debt here, and still end up working at a minimum wage job because the degree is crap. Can't get rich with graduating with a major in lesbian dance theory.

I plan too, I used to be a serious leftie when I was a teenager (living with my dad that was, for this country, well off. Made twice what a normal person takes to make here). I started working myself, had a family here and oh my lord have things changed. Being a teenager living at home with your dad that makes ok money is something entirely different from family life in this country. We chose to have a family here cause I mistakenly thought that my countries welfare programmes would help us out lol. You are told in this country the govt will help you out, that is what you pay taxes for. The parental leave is generous, Ill give Norway that. But that is about it. Its said that if you are a low income family they will help you find a place to rent. Nope, only drugaddicts get those acommodations. They say the norwegian government might help you get a good loan on a house without as much downpayment? Nope we arent considered for that either cause Im not a single mom. Tax cut? Those are only reserved for single moms. meanwhile the jobmarked is so difficult. When a job for washing dishes requires two years experience I think Norway has gone too far... You need a test to drive a freaking taxi. Id give anything for him to just have a good job and me to have a good job but this country makes it HARD. We get by but with no money for anything fun. I dont know where all these taxes go, but it seems its not to help us regular people.
My husband is a veteran so he pays MORE for healthcare here than in his country. He went to the doctors office today to get a wart removed and they were out of liquid nitrogen, its the type of wart that its best to cut out surgically but the lady in the doctors office said "we dont do that here". lol ok. He also thought daycare was free, nope, 400 dollars per child. You also have to pay for someone to watch your child before and after school from grade 1-4 usually. 500 dollars per child. Were does all our oilmoney go? Or taxmoney? Our culture budget is one area. They pay so called modern artists millions to act stupid on stage. The last incident was a woman getting a little over 1 million dollars
(!!!!) to do seizure like dancing on stage . Not to mention foreign aid, oh my lord do we spend a lot on foreign aid. Meanwhile the government denies people sitting and standing MRIs cause "lying down is good enough" (even though it is totally not), denies people medications cause they are too expensive. Lets just say Ive seen the light with government spending. Its so wasteful. I thought it actually went to help us taxpayers, but it doesnt. And where it somewhat helps (like reduced daycare costs) it gives the state too much power over what you do. So I think we should either move or get into arts and get 1 million dollars from the government to have seizures on stage.
We would both make much more money in america. Yes we would pay more in healthcare, but its not nearly enough to be more than what cars, rent etc. cost here. I think starting wage for a nurse in the US is around $65 grand, a few years under your belt and a lot of hours can net you an easy $100 grand a year.
Your system sounds exactly like the one the Democrats gave the black community back in 1965. It resulted in completely destroying the black family and wound up keeping blacks on the Dim slavery plantation ever since.

I can understand that, this country aint changing. People have become so dependent on government assistance and welfare I dont think they would quite know how to function without it. The work ethic here is really quite bad, even for the ones lucky enough to have a full time job (which is 34 hours a week or something) . Never work overtime, never work extra weekends for jobs with weekend work (in norway you cannot be forced to work more than every third weekend, your employer cant let you go if you dont want to even though they might need someone to work every other weekend or every weekend), use a lot of sick leave days. Now I get it, people sometimes gets sick. But there is no way that system is not being abused. 20 days, you dont need to go to a doctor (altough after 4 days an employer can request a doctors note). But if you divide them up throughout the year you can use all without your employer saying anything.
A lot of people that get welfare checks do in fact have jobs on the side, they just cant get enough hours to make it. They are not part of the unemployment statistic, btw.

That sounds so good to me right now hah, and my husband could get a real job too. That would be nice. Here is doesnt matter how many years you work as a nurse, you get a max of 60 000 dollars. Even after like 15 years. And you dont tend to get overtime, its to expensive for the employer (since healthcare is socialized they tend to want to spend as little money as possible, unless its for like fancy massage chairs there is plenty of room in the budget for such nonsense)

I don't know how it is there, but if you have a skill in the US, you're better off going into business for yourself. Here, a private nurse can make a killing, and your husband? Well, he probably already knows what he can do being a private entrepreneur.

It does happen its not impossible, its just not very common. I dont know why that is exactly as I havent looked into how hard or difficult it is to open up a business here. I just register that I see a lot of chains, not so many small stores. The exeption being Oslo (our capital). Lots of foreigners there. So a carpenter can't just run an ad in the local paper advertising his skills for home repair, or a licensed nurse advertise for in home care for the elderly?
Years ago when I was building my own home, all by myself, the neighbor had relatives visiting from Germany, the whole family walked by and glared at me, I waved, they just glared.
I asked the neighbor what their problem was, he said that in Germany no one but licensed craftsman are allowed to build, that it is illegal to do the work yourself, because you are stealing work from other people.
What stupid people, as if doing for yourself is somehow evil.
The entire concept is foreign here, in the US people are encouraged to do for themselves, it's part of the American way, the pioneer spirit of conquering ones domain.

I saw that living and traveling in Europe. Taxes are complicated and employee costs are ridiculous. We had a European factories in Holland, Belgium , Norway and the UK. We closed the one in Oslo because of the employment costs and laws. We also sold the one in Belgium because it was the worst possible place to ever have an employee and sourced everything out to Eastern Europe. Before Trump, that was exactly what we were doing in the USA.

A carpenter has to have training through 2 years theory in high school then two years training in a business. So Even if you Are very good you arent allowed, no. No nurse owns a private business here. You always work for someone else. There Are a few private healthcare serives around but most cant afford those so its a very small marked.

Yeah Its not good for business. A lot of Jobs in this country is through the government. I think like 30-40% but dont qote me on that cause I cant quite remember
The Jobs dont pay particularly well . Did you know btw that every single Norwegian person ends up costing more than what we collect through taxes? In part cause our budget is HUGE and there is lots of waste, but also due to like sick leave pay , parental leave etc. And its not gonna get better. Norwegians Arent having kids. Its like down to 1.6 children per woman no. My generation is full of people not having kids. How Are we gonna keep up this spending?

I would venture some of it is because most of your fellow citizens have bought into the idea the government will take care of everything. That is what we are fighting here in the US right now.

I used to think so too, I was raised that way. Fighting that battle in this country now is useless. People dont see that this is a ticking time bomb. I think a very important point might be that the countries in Europe are actually distinct, whereas America's states tend to fall in under a more homogenizing template. As the culture goes, so go the states.
When you have a smaller, more autonomous country, you can control things inside it more effectively than in an enormous country like the US.
It's interesting that some European countries have realized the Muslim threat and stave it off, whilst others don't.
Not to mention what I paid for a drink when dining in Oslo. Norway must only have wealthy alcoholics.
It is going to be interesting to see what happens to revenues for the government of Denmark without oil/gas revenues as they completely sell them off. Could the current government of Norway survive without its oil revenues?

Not at Its current size no, Its worth mentioning we have a budget 5 times the size of Finlands . Yet they have no toll Money and denmark has state owned housing with cheaper rent. That is the reality about the homeless that the Liberals do not want to admit. They are there due to mental issues of drug abuse. If I lost everything somehow then I would head to the nearest church and they would take care of me and help me locate a job. Homeless shelters in the USA is an industry. Government pays them to fill themselves up. Our local one advertises with in 100s of miles to come to our area.

The comparisons are confusing. In the US we pay Federal Income Tax, State income taxes Payroll taxes, property taxes.... so the argument changes by what state you live in. what income bracket you are in and what country you compare to.
Let's say you are in Norway and you are a lowest income earner- You have a low tax, there is no state to tax but you pay on your income that US employees do not. Then everything you buy has a 25% Sales tax or VAT. You are better off in the USA for taxes. Then you have to look at the value of the services. That depends on your personal position.
I have a problem with someone saying that I have a problem so you should involuntarily pay for it because I exist and demand it. There is nothing I want to do more than to support those that need help voluntarily but these globalists want tax breaks for supporting art museums and colleges so they can boost their image or for people not in their own homeland. You should never get a US tax break for helping people in another country. Do it, but no tax break.

Latest in insane prices in Norway: 280 000 dollars for a tiny one bedroom apartment. 34 m2, not sure what you guys really use for apartments and such bit when I use google IT says 300 square feet. Its tiny anyway. Like all housing here these days cause of the prices. No wonder people arent having kids or have too few. They cant fit them

Oh yeah, it's a huge thing in Europe because of housing costs. It cuts over a third off the price of construction.

Hell, I can't get anyone to start work at my house in a reasonable time. Everyone is 4 or 5 months out...except the contractors that want $12,000 for 100 sq foot for just a stand alone shower. They can be hired in a week....... :lol:
I have to start my ensuite or my wife is boycotting our Saturday night get togethers.
There is work all over the damn place all you need is an alarm clock and a tank of gas.

Most RNs I know are in the 70s/year, unless in a Metropolis. They make more, but they have to put up with and spend, more.
