We've had these disasters where dense fog settles.
It happened to us about half way up into the mountains. Scary time when you can't see two feet in front of you.
Farther north along that same borderline, in Michigan, it's hilly country and similar pileups have occurred on both I-94 and (back a bit to the south) the Ohio Turnpike. Yesterday, for example, I was out in what became a total white-out, with snow completely blocking visibility.
Instant total white. It's terrifying at even 35 miles per hour on a hilly curvy 2-lane road like most of ours. The expressways cited above are far far worse.
So sure, blame the drivers if you want to. Until you've been there. Right north along that very same line you mentioned.
